Wedding Planner Scam

Unfortunately this post is not very fun or light hearted. I recently became a victim of a scam, but fortunately realized the fallacy before I entered serious financial trouble. A man by the name of Peter Woodgate emailed me to say he and his fiancé live in the UK and are getting married in Lake Tahoe. They would not be able to visit Tahoe prior to the wedding and would like a wedding coordinator to take care of the details. A few emails later, he disclosed that he would be sending me a check in the amount of $45,000 to pay for all wedding expenses. I asked to setup a phone meeting to discuss all of the details, he emailed me his number.

I was a little suspicious as most people with a budget of $45,000 wouldn’t just hand over a check in the full amount. They also would have much more interest in the type of flowers, style, and vendors booked. So, I googled the phone number (01144-704-579-8736) and sure enough it was a scam. The idea is that he sends over the “cashiers check” and then asks you to wire some of the money back. He then has your bank account number and hacks away, stealing all of your money!

Hopefully, nobody falls for this scam!

I was contacted with the same BS from George Anthony. I thought 14K was a large sum for 50 people, he was hearing impaired, worked on a ship and got very mad when I called him out on this. It is sad people cannot work for a living, they rather try to steal from someone.

Just received a similar email. I then googled the number and this was the 1st site that came up. This is a scam so please be careful! I received something similar a few months ago and after wasting several days of it planning I was immediately halted after a request for some strange financial dealings.

I also received a ton of these while I was a paying member of Weddingwire.com . I reported it several times but had to cancel my membership because I was receiving so many bogus inquires similar to this one and just refused tof pay for wasting my time.

Have received two emails from a Hutton Patrick & Patrick Hutton in the last month. One requesting coordination services for a family reunion and the other requesting coordination services for his anniversary.
He had each event only set to be a month away from the email (red flag!) and each time one of the main questions was always “do you accept all forms or payment?” or “do you accept credit cards?” (another red flag!)

    Email #1: patrick.goodlife@hotmail.com
    Email #2: hpatirick@yahoo.com

Keep an eye ut for these scammers!

Hi! I just wanted to give you a personal thank you for posting this. It has been 10 years and he is still at it! New name but same scam. As a new wedding planner, your post truly confirmed my suspicions. He made it fairly obvious that he did not actually want a wedding and was too laid back about details so I thought to look them up and sure enough you are not the only one who has come into contact with him.

Again, thank you, this saved me a lot of time and effort in planning!

Be VERY careful Event Planners! I received a text from a James Moore from 940-463-4131 inquiring about my event planning services for his 10th Wedding Anniversary. Seaman/Sailor wanting to budget $15k towards this event. I knew this sounded fishy and luckily found your blog after searching for the words “scam sailor event”. I’m posting his fake name here, along with the cell phone no. (so it can show up on future engine search inquiries) and was told by TX Attorney General that the phone appears to used in Russia/UK and does not have a complaint against it. I’ll be filing the first complaint to get that phone no. on the radar! Below is the email from James Moore at jamesmoore00900@gmail.com:

    Hello,

    Thanks for your prompt response.

Due to the nature of my job, a Seaman/Sailor, always on a ship taking cargo from one destination to the other, it’s kinda hard to plan a successful 10th year wedding anniversary party with the intent to make it a surprise party to wife, family and some friends all on my own, I guess I need help. I’d like to hire the services of an event planner in regards to my upcoming 10th year wedding anniversary which is coming up on Oct 14 2017, but I don’t wanna host this event at my residence, I’m already having lots of stress planning this event on my own that’s why i want you to please coordinate this event for me, as I do believe that you will do me a lovely party and thrill my guest to the best of your ability.

Listed below are the services needed for the event:

*Getting us a venue is very important
*Making proper arrangements for flowers and decor
    *Photography services
*Catering Services; food and drinks for the guest I presume my guests would like to try a new cuisine. but it shouldn’t be more than my budget.
*I’d prefer a DJ and would like R&B and Jazz music.
*Event color : White and Lemon
    *3tier Cake
    *Budget : 15k

I would like to inform you that all payments to vendors will have to go through you as my party coordinator/event planner and you can get all the necessary arrangement done for my event as i am officially out of town because my work makes me travel a lot and that’s because I work 24/7 on a ship, so I’m always on the high sea but I will be in town 5 days prior to my wedding anniversary. My party time is 3pm to 7pm, Expected guest is 50. I’ll like to know how much you charge for this kind of event. Deposit or full payment, will be made asap with my credit card once availability for venue is confirmed by you. I believe you can bring a level of service that surpasses anything we’ve seen before.

Please acknowledge the receipt of this mail and revert to me as soon as you can.

    Thanks

So I received an email from a Michael Ladson wanting a 10 year Anniversary Party. He said he works on a boat 24/7. Here are the details: His email is mcladson301@gmail. His phone number is 404.900.0602.

“Below here is all what is needed for my event :-

    *Event venue in Atlanta

    *Flowers and Decor

    *DJ & Photography service

    *Event color: white and purple

*Budget : 4k-5k (Doesn’t include the limousines service that will be our guest to the event venue and take them back home to house party.

I want you to be rest assured that all the payment as been secured except the private limo service and i can get all the necessary arrangement done for my event as i work 24/7 in a ship out of town but will be in town 5 days prior to my wedding anniversary. I want you to make all schedule is plan well with all vendors photographer, DJ including you, in order on the given date starting from 2pm to 7pm, expected guest is about 35 to 40 guests also how much do you charge for this type of event deposit or full payment will be made with my credit card. I believe you can bring a level of service at your job that surpasses anything we’ve seen before. I look forward to read back from you.”
So I googled the address he gave me and it’s a house for rent and I spoke to the realtor who confirmed no one lives there. We spoke on the phone and the phone crackled and dropped out like he was calling me from the other side of earth and he had a thick African accent. He said he would arrive a few days before the event (scheduled for 5/10). I’ve since called him out on his BS and he got quite angry. If I’m kidnapped and held for ransom by Somalia pirates tell my family I love them.

Same story here. Sailor Andrew Blink planning a surprise 10 year anniversary party for 50 people and a 14K budget. He will not be in the country until a few days before the party so I will have to handle everything. I knew immediately something was up but couldn’t figure out what the scam was. Happened to us too! He’s still going. Same “Nichols Lamont”, same phone number, same story, word for word. He will change the place of his wedding, the colors, and his budget. But everything else pretty much stays the same. Who says “wedlock anniversary” anyway? I was telling a wedding industry friend of mine about it, and she joked that if you’re going to be a scammer, at least learn about the industry. Thank goodness they have red flags. How these people have zero conscience is unfathomable.

I received a text this morning that, while on the surface, seemed legit, rang the BS bells for me. When I put in the phone # of 917-391-1320 with the name he used, low and behold, this page came up! He must be reading these pages, since he has wised up and now says “wedding Anniversary”. Here is the text: “Good morning, My name is Nichols Lamont i want to book an appointment with you for my wedding Anniversary can i have your email address so that i can send you more details and service needed.” I can’t tell you exactly what made me suspicious, but if he has my phone #, it seemed to me he had to get it from my website which would have my email on it. I just knew I needed to check it out before responding in any way. I am now reporting this # and blocking it on my phone. So glad these websites are here!

  24. Posted June 13, 2017 at 7:21 am | Permalink

I also was contacted by Nichols Lamont yesterday (06/12) inquiring about services needed for a wedding anniversary that is scheduled a month away (July 15, 2017). I was instantly suspicious when he gave me his e-mail address which seemed very generic but I was willing to give him the benefit of the doubt since he was willing to call me (very thick accent that is difficult to understand and he was on speakerphone which makes it even more difficult). I have had many legitimate clients who have contacted me through referral who were out of state and did not have all of their details in place, so that alone was not enough to raise a red flag but everything combined screams to proceed with extreme caution. Plus, the referral came from a trusted person who I followed up with but was not able to fully confirm the details of the connection due to extenuating circumstances. The next red flag was that the client was sure that my method of receiving payment (Square or Paypal) would not work because his card does not work with those and I needed to set up a paid merchant service through Chase in order to take payment from him. I confirmed with Square that there is in fact no reason that a card would not be able to go through them and was reminded to google the client’s e-mail address which brought me to this page. Remember, if the client is putting you in a place of urgency that makes you feel like you could potentially be missing out on sale if you don’t act immediately and do things the way that they are dictating to you to run your business… that’s exactly what the scammer wants you to feel so that you’ll act impulsively. Beware!

Same exact email as stated above regarding the need for a planner for a surprise 10th wedding anniversary. He is a seaman/Sailor BS. He contacted me on May 30th 2017. I was suspect from early on but being a new business I entertained the inquiry longer than I should have. Thanks to this post and other do diligence I’m happy to report I was not a victim to this BS. I was also contacted by “Mario Hope,” just like “D” on May 23, 2017. I wish I had thought to check this blog before. It sounded somewhat legit and when I began to press him to meet that is when I began to feel this was not on the up and up. As much as I love planning and organizing (and I did get excited when I got the email,) I did not fall for the “Hook,” which is the following:

“”Am okay with the estimate but I need little favor from you for my parent favorite Gospel Band? the favor is that I have not pay the Band that will perform on that day which am inviting them as surprise for my Parent. I can’t do that my self due to my present tensed condition which they need to receive an upfront payment for there service & instrument renting.

The Band don’t have access to credit card facilities for now so I need a favor from you to charge my credit card for the amount of $7,950.34 so you can proceed with the Planning and charge rest payment in next 5 working days due to my account limit. You will hold on to $3000 as your deposit $200 as your Errand fee and you will make cash deposit of $4,650.34 to the Band’s account on my behalf so they can approve their appointment.

Let me know if you are ready to charge my credit card now, so you can proceed with all necessary arrangment.

    Thanks

    Mario Hope””

I have currently reported this to the BBB and our local law enforcement. As of right now, I am “playing” along in hopes that there is something that will allow them to catch the culprits.

Yes, it is unfortunately that people have no problem trying to swindle honest hardworking people out of their money. We have to be diligent and protect each other! Beware!!!
